He waited for her to say what he needed to hear—that she understood what he was going through. But he had no right to expect her to understand when he was so confused himself. He couldn’t face moving out west, leaving Paige just when they were getting somewhere. He couldn’t grasp the idea of moving thousands of miles away to a strange city, starting over, in the hope of staying in daily contact with his son.

On the other hand, he couldn’t see his life without Aidan.

There had to be a better way. He had to convince Sara that Aidan was better off here with him and his family.

He’d tried to talk to her about that, but she was totally preoccupied with her newfound success.

His whole life was one big mix-up, but that wasn’t Paige’s problem. He'd find a solution, and if it meant leaving Durham for L.A., well, he’d have to make the best of it. Leaving Aidan was not an option.

He let his eyes move over her face, seeing the ambivalence in her eyes, the way her hands worried the fabric of her chinos. If he wanted something more than friendship with Paige, he had to take it slow. He had to get his own life under control. Until then, he had no business offering her anything but his friendship. “I'm going now,” he said, easing out of the chair.

She didn’t follow him to the door.
